Anya Mokhova is a contemporary artist based in London. After receiving her BA degree in Design she went onto Graduate Diploma and then MA in Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2011. For the past years Anya has been successfully merging her career as an artist and as a sculpture tutor in contemporary art. Since her graduation Anya has visited summer schools and residencies, such as Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in 2016 and Royal College of Art in London in 2017. Her recent appearances included the Jewish Museum in Moscow, Tbilisi Art Fair in Georgia, Shoreditch Arts Club, and Shtager&Shch gallery in London. She was commissioned by world brands, property developers, and media.
Anya’s practice is centered around notions of historical narratives and precedents, which she reinvents linking them to personal stories. She often starts by developing ideas around a certain theme, but then the majority of work happens through experimentation with materials and processes. She uses natural tallow, wax, soap, essential oils, and jelly, and merges them with acrylic, resin, and silicone. She often interprets classical techniques, such as incrustation, engraving, and casting. These complex processes allow her to find her visual language, often inviting a visitor to engage with objects not only with the help of vision, but touch, smell, and taste. In her work, she aims to question the boundaries between real and metaphysical and proposes to explore mystery and fantasy in the mundane through visual, sensual, and imaginative ways of perception of artist-created objects and spaces.
